Raise Negotiation Best Practices
Time It Right
Request a raise after a major win, during your annual review cycle, or when you have a competing offer in hand. Never ask during a period of company layoffs or financial distress.
Anchor High
Research shows that the first number stated in a negotiation anchors the entire conversation. Always ask for the top of your range — you can always come down, but you can rarely go up.
Use Market Data
Reference specific sources: Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, LinkedIn Salary, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Saying "market data shows..." is far more persuasive than "I feel I deserve..."
Get It in Writing
A verbal commitment is not a raise. Always follow up any verbal agreement with an email summarizing what was discussed and ask for written confirmation before the conversation ends.
